Charles Martel

Charles Martel was a Frankish military leader and mayor of the palace who governed much of Francia and defeated an Umayyad force near Tours in 732.

Pepin of Herstal: A Frankish mayor of the palace who dominated the kingdoms of Austrasia and Neustria until his death in 714. His son Charles inherited a fractured political landscape and a contested claim to authority.
