Knowra Chassis Chassis A vehicle’s main supporting structure, to which components such as the engine, suspension, and body are attached. It carries loads and helps determine how the vehicle handles and protects occupants.
Vehicle frame : A structural framework that supports a vehicle’s mechanical components and body. In body-on-frame vehicles, this frame is the chassis’s principal load-bearing structure.
Body-on-frame : A vehicle construction method in which a separate body is mounted on a supporting frame. It keeps the chassis distinct from the body, unlike integrated construction.
Automobile chassis : The supporting structure and associated systems of a road car. Passenger cars balance packaging, crash protection, stiffness, and ride through chassis design.
Vehicle dynamics : The study of forces and motion governing a vehicle’s acceleration, braking, and turning. Chassis stiffness and geometry influence how a vehicle responds to driver inputs.
Suspension : A system of springs, dampers, and linkages connecting a vehicle’s wheels to its structure. Its forces pass between the wheels and chassis, shaping ride and handling.
Unibody : A construction method in which the body and structural frame form one load-bearing shell. It combines the chassis’s structural role with the body rather than using a separate frame.
Truck chassis : A heavy-duty vehicle structure designed to support a cab, powertrain, and cargo or equipment. Truck chassis must carry high loads and often accommodate specialized bodies.
Crashworthiness : A vehicle’s ability to protect occupants during a collision through its structure and safety systems. The chassis and body manage impact forces and preserve occupant survival space.
Steering system : The mechanisms that control a vehicle’s direction by changing the orientation of its wheels. Steering components attach to or act through the chassis to guide the vehicle.
Space frame : A three-dimensional framework of connected structural members that carries loads through its geometry. It offers a distinct frame architecture, often used when low mass and stiffness matter.
