Chemical inertness

Chemical inertness is a substance’s low tendency to undergo chemical reactions under specified conditions. It is relative to the reaction environment, not an absolute inability to react.

Activation energy: The minimum energy needed for reactants to reach a transition state and proceed toward products. A high barrier can make a potentially favorable reaction too slow to observe.
Argon: A colorless noble gas used where an atmosphere with low chemical reactivity is needed. Welding and industrial processes use argon to shield hot materials from reactive gases.
Fluorine: A highly reactive chemical element and the most electronegative element. Its vigorous reactions contrast with the low reactivity associated with inert substances.
Noble-gas compounds: Chemical compounds containing one or more noble-gas atoms. Their existence overturns the idea that noble gases are universally unable to form compounds.
Chemical kinetics: The study of reaction rates and the factors that control them. Inertness often describes slow reaction rates rather than thermodynamic impossibility.
Helium: A light noble gas with very low chemical reactivity under ordinary conditions. Its inertness supports uses such as leak detection and protective atmospheres.
Sodium: A soft alkali metal that reacts readily with water and oxygen. Its need for protective storage illustrates strong reactivity under ordinary conditions.
Xenon chemistry: The chemistry of xenon, including its compounds with fluorine and oxygen. Xenon compounds demonstrate how extreme conditions and strong reactants can overcome apparent inertness.
Thermodynamic stability: The tendency of a system to remain in, or move toward, a state of lower Gibbs free energy. It distinguishes resistance caused by favorable energy from resistance caused by slow kinetics.
Tetrafluoroethylene: A fluorinated compound used as the monomer for producing polytetrafluoroethylene. Its polymer’s chemical resistance makes it useful for coatings and seals.
