Chisel

A chisel is a tool with a sharpened edge used to cut or shape material by striking or pushing it.

Bevel: A sloping surface that meets another surface to form an edge. The bevel guides the cutting edge into material and affects how the chisel cuts.
Bench chisel: A general-purpose woodworking chisel used for cutting, paring, and fitting joints. Its balanced blade and handle make it a common reference form for woodworking chisels.
Mortise-and-tenon: A woodworking joint formed by fitting a projecting tenon into a matching mortise. Chisels cut and refine the mortise that receives the tenon.
Gouge: A chisel-like cutting tool with a curved blade used to make grooves or hollow forms. Its curved edge removes material differently from a chisel's usually straight edge.
Cutting edge: The narrow boundary where a tool's faces meet and material is severed or deformed. A chisel works by concentrating force along this sharpened boundary.
Cold chisel: A hardened steel chisel used to cut cold metal, masonry, or other hard materials. Its robust construction suits impact cutting where a wood chisel would be damaged.
Wood carving: The shaping of wood by removing material with hand tools or machines. Carving chisels make controlled cuts that turn a blank into a detailed form.
Plane (tool): A hand tool that smooths or reduces a surface by shaving thin layers of material. A plane cuts with a fixed blade and guided sole, unlike a hand-directed chisel.
Hammer: A hand tool with a weighted head used to deliver impact through a handle. A hammer drives a chisel when cutting requires repeated impacts.
Mortise chisel: A thick woodworking chisel designed to cut deep, narrow mortises under mallet blows. Its sturdy blade withstands the heavy impacts needed to remove wood from a mortise.
