Tool (implement)

A device used to carry out a task, especially by applying force to material or changing its shape. Tools extend human ability by concentrating force, improving precision, or making actions repeatable.

Mechanical advantage: The ratio of a machine’s output force to its input force. Many implements multiply or redirect the force applied by a hand.
Wedge: A sloped surface that converts force applied across its thickness into force along its faces. Axes, chisels, and knives use wedge geometry to split or cut material.
Oldowan: An early stone-tool industry characterized by simple flakes and cores, dating from about 2.6 million years ago. Oldowan artifacts are among the earliest known deliberately made implements.
Hand axe: A handheld cutting tool with a shaped head, typically made of stone or metal. Its edge supports chopping, cutting, and butchering without a haft.
Machine: A system of parts that transmits or transforms energy to perform work. A machine may contain tools while adding power, automation, or multiple mechanisms.
Leverage: The use of a lever to gain force or distance around a pivot. A long handle lets a tool apply greater force at its working end.
Lever: A rigid bar that pivots around a fulcrum to transmit or multiply force. Pliers and crowbars use lever action to increase grip or prying force.
Acheulean: A stone-tool industry known for large bifacial handaxes and cleavers. Acheulean handaxes show sustained shaping and standardized tool forms.
Chisel: A tool with a shaped cutting edge, driven by hand or hammer to cut or shape material. The chisel concentrates impact along an edge to remove material precisely.
Power tool: A tool driven by an external power source rather than solely by human effort. Power tools retain a task-specific working end but add powered motion.
