Chōshū Domain

A feudal domain in western Japan, ruled by the Mōri clan, whose leaders helped overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate and establish imperial rule in 1868.

Mōri clan: A Japanese samurai clan that ruled Chōshū Domain and shaped its politics for centuries. The clan governed Chōshū and supplied its ruling leadership.
Yoshida Shōin: A Japanese scholar whose teachings and activism influenced reformers in late Tokugawa Chōshū. His Shōka Sonjuku school educated several leaders who later shaped the domain’s political course.
