Chromium

Chromium is a hard, silvery transition metal with atomic number 24. Its resistance to corrosion makes it valuable in stainless steel, protective coatings, and pigments.

Stainless steel: Steel containing enough chromium to form a corrosion-resistant surface layer. Chromium is the key alloying element that gives stainless steel its protective oxide film.
Passivation: The formation of a thin surface film that slows a material’s further corrosion. Chromium passivates by forming a compact oxide layer that blocks corrosive attack.
Louis Nicolas Vauquelin: A French chemist who discovered chromium in 1797 while analyzing the mineral crocoite. Vauquelin isolated chromium and established it as a distinct element.
Hexavalent chromium: Chromium in the +6 oxidation state, present in compounds such as chromates and dichromates. This highly toxic form creates major risks in some chromium processing and plating operations.
Chrome plating: An electroplating process that deposits a thin layer of chromium onto an object. It uses chromium’s hardness and corrosion resistance to protect and finish surfaces.
Chromium(III) oxide: The stable green oxide Cr₂O₃, used as a pigment and as a protective material. This oxide is the principal film responsible for chromium’s resistance to oxidation.
Crocoite: A bright red-orange lead chromate mineral, PbCrO₄, found in oxidized lead deposits. Its vivid color drew Vauquelin’s attention and led to chromium’s discovery.
Chromium toxicity: Harmful effects caused by exposure to chromium, which vary sharply by chemical form and route. The contrast between essential chromium(III) and hazardous chromium(VI) shapes health guidance.
Nichrome: A family of nickel–chromium alloys used in electrical resistance heating elements. Chromium helps these alloys resist oxidation at high operating temperatures.
Chromium oxidation states: The different electron-loss states chromium adopts in compounds, especially +3 and +6. Its changing oxidation states produce distinct compounds, colors, and hazards.
