Claudius Ptolemy

Claudius Ptolemy was a second-century Greco-Roman astronomer and author of the Almagest. His mathematical geocentric system modeled the motions of the Sun, Moon, and planets using circles, including deferents and epicycles.

Deferent and epicycle: A geometric model in which a planet moves on a small circle whose center travels around a larger circle centered near Earth. This nested-circle construction is the signature device of Ptolemy’s planetary models.
Hipparchus: A Greek astronomer of the second century BCE known for mathematical astronomy, observations, and a star catalog. Ptolemy adopted and extended astronomical methods associated with Hipparchus.
