Clavicle

The clavicle, or collarbone, is an S-shaped bone connecting the sternum to the scapula. It braces the shoulder away from the trunk and transmits forces between the arm and torso.

Sternoclavicular joint: The joint between the clavicle and the manubrium of the sternum. This is the clavicle’s only direct bony connection to the axial skeleton.
Shoulder girdle: The bones and joints that connect the upper limb to the axial skeleton. The clavicle is a principal strut within this linking structure.
Clavicle fracture: A break in the collarbone, commonly occurring in its middle third. The bone’s exposed position and curvature make this a frequent injury.
Humerus: The long bone of the upper arm, extending from the shoulder to the elbow. Unlike the clavicle, it articulates directly with the scapula and carries the forearm.
Acromioclavicular joint: The joint between the acromion of the scapula and the lateral end of the clavicle. It completes the clavicle’s connection to the shoulder blade.
Shoulder movement: The coordinated motion of the humerus, scapula, and clavicle that positions the arm. Clavicular rotation and elevation accompany scapular motion as the arm rises.
Birth fracture: A bone fracture sustained during childbirth, most commonly involving the clavicle. The clavicle can fracture during delivery, especially with shoulder dystocia.
First rib: The uppermost rib, forming part of the thoracic inlet and attaching to the sternum. It lies beneath the clavicle but does not form the shoulder’s bony strut.
Scapula: A flat, triangular bone that forms the rear part of the shoulder girdle. The clavicle meets the scapula at the acromioclavicular joint.
Scapulohumeral rhythm: The coordinated contribution of glenohumeral and scapular motion during arm elevation. Clavicular motion enables the scapular rotation that contributes to this coordination.
