Cleisthenes (Athenian statesman)

Cleisthenes was an Athenian politician whose reforms around 508/507 BCE reorganized political membership and institutions, laying foundations for Athenian democracy.

Demes of Attica: Local communities that served as the basic units of Athenian civic registration and administration. Registration in a deme anchored citizen identity in Cleisthenes’ reorganization.
