Clicker training

Clicker training uses a distinct sound to mark a desired behavior, then reinforces that behavior with a reward. The sound precisely signals which action earned the reward.

Operant conditioning: A learning process in which consequences change the likelihood of a behavior occurring again. Clicker training applies this broader process by reinforcing marked actions.
Positive reinforcement: Increasing a behavior's future frequency by adding a consequence after it occurs. A reward following the click is intended to increase the marked behavior.
Dog training: The teaching of behaviors and responses to dogs through cues, consequences, and practice. Clicker training is widely used to teach dogs precise actions and cues.
Luring (animal training): A training method that guides an animal into a behavior by using a visible or scented reward. Luring guides movement directly, while a click marks a behavior after it occurs.
Conditioned reinforcer: A previously neutral stimulus that gains reinforcing value through association with another reinforcer. Repeated pairing with food makes the click valuable even before the reward arrives.
Discriminative stimulus: A stimulus that signals when a particular behavior is likely to be reinforced. A cue can tell an animal when a trained response will earn a click and reward.
Animal training: The process of teaching animals behaviors through learning, practice, and consequences. Clicker training is one method within this broader practice.
Target training: Training an animal to touch or follow a designated object or body target. A target can prompt a behavior that clicker training then marks and reinforces.
Marker signal: A brief, consistent stimulus that identifies the behavior being reinforced. The click marks the exact action that earns reinforcement.
Behavior: An action or response of an organism that can be observed or measured. Training changes the likelihood of specific observable actions.
