Close-up

A cinematic shot that frames a subject tightly, often emphasizing a face or detail. Its limited field of view directs attention toward expression, texture, or a specific object.

Shot size: A scale of camera framing based on how much of a subject appears in the image. Close-ups are among the tightest common shot sizes, defined by how much of the subject fills the frame.
Extreme close-up: A shot framing only a very small part of a subject, such as an eye or object detail. It intensifies the close-up’s focus by excluding nearly all surrounding context.
Extreme long shot: A shot showing a subject at a great distance within a broad surrounding environment. It subordinates facial detail to landscape and spatial scale, reversing the close-up’s emphasis.
The Great Train Robbery: A 1903 American silent film directed by Edwin S. Porter, known for its early use of narrative editing. Its final shot famously presents a bandit firing directly toward the camera in close framing.
Kuleshov effect: An editing effect in which viewers infer different meanings from the same image when paired with different shots. It demonstrates that a close-up’s apparent emotion can depend on its neighboring images.
Camera angle: The position and orientation of a camera relative to its subject. A close-up’s angle can make a face appear vulnerable, imposing, or neutral.
Insert shot: A shot of a specific object or detail, usually presented within a scene’s continuity. An insert often uses close framing to make a prop or action unmistakable.
Long shot: A shot showing a subject’s full body and a substantial portion of its surroundings. It preserves bodily action and setting that tight framing excludes.
D. W. Griffith: An American film director whose early work helped develop continuity editing and expressive shot scale. His films made close framing a recurring tool for directing attention and intensifying emotion.
Fourth wall: The imaginary boundary between a performance and its audience. A face in close framing can feel especially direct when its gaze appears to cross this boundary.
