Codeine

Codeine is an opioid medication used to relieve pain and suppress coughing. The body converts some codeine into morphine, so its effects vary with metabolism and dose.

Opioid receptor: A cell-surface receptor activated by opioid peptides and opioid drugs, influencing pain, reward, and other functions. Codeine and its metabolites produce analgesia chiefly through opioid-receptor signaling.

Antitussive: A medicine intended to reduce coughing. Codeine has been used to suppress cough, though benefits and recommendations vary by setting.
Oxycodone: A semisynthetic opioid analgesic used for moderate to severe pain. Oxycodone is a stronger alternative whose analgesia does not depend on conversion into morphine.
Opioid withdrawal: A cluster of symptoms that can follow reduction or cessation after physical dependence on opioids. Regular codeine use can produce dependence, and stopping may trigger withdrawal.
Morphine: A potent opioid analgesic found in opium and used medically to treat severe pain. Morphine is both a codeine metabolite and a point of comparison for its effects.
Acetaminophen/codeine: A combination medicine containing the analgesics acetaminophen and codeine. Combining the drugs can provide pain relief while adding acetaminophen-related risks.
