Combustion chamber

A space in an engine where fuel reacts with an oxidizer, releasing heat that drives a piston, turbine, or other machinery.

Fuel–air mixture: A blend of fuel and air prepared for combustion in an engine. Its composition and distribution shape flame behavior and power output.
Cylinder: The engine bore in which a piston moves and gases are compressed or expanded. In a reciprocating engine, it encloses the combustion chamber with the piston and head.
Internal combustion engine: An engine that produces power by burning fuel inside a working chamber. Combustion chambers are the defining reaction spaces in this engine family.
Hemispherical combustion chamber: A combustion-chamber shape with a roughly hemispherical roof above the cylinder. It is a named geometry used to arrange valves and a central spark plug.
Ignition system: Engine components that initiate combustion, typically with an electric spark or hot surface. It determines when combustion begins in spark-ignition chambers.
Piston: A moving engine component that transmits gas pressure to a connecting rod or mechanism. Its position helps define chamber volume and compression.
Spark-ignition engine: An internal combustion engine in which an electric spark initiates combustion. Its chamber must support reliable flame propagation from the spark plug.
Pentroof combustion chamber: A chamber with sloping roof surfaces that accommodate angled valves, often in four-valve engines. Its layout contrasts with hemispherical designs while enabling compact valve arrangements.
Flame front: The moving boundary between unburned reactants and burned gases in a flame. Its propagation governs how quickly the chamber releases heat.
Cylinder head: The engine structure that closes the top of a cylinder and may contain valves and ports. Its shape and passages form part of the chamber boundary.
