Commutative algebra

Commutative algebra studies commutative rings, their ideals, and modules. It connects algebraic structures to geometric spaces and arithmetic questions.

Commutative ring: A ring whose multiplication satisfies ab = ba for every pair of elements. These rings are the central objects commutative algebra investigates.
Spectrum of a ring: The set of prime ideals of a ring, equipped with a topology and structure sheaf. The spectrum turns a ring into a geometric space, linking algebra to geometry.
Algebraic geometry: The study of geometric spaces defined by polynomial equations using algebraic methods. Commutative rings provide coordinate algebras for affine algebraic geometry.
