Compressed air

Compressed air is air stored above atmospheric pressure. When released, it expands and can drive tools, move materials, or produce a directed stream.

Air compressor: A machine that raises air pressure by reducing its volume or transferring energy to it. It supplies the pressure that makes compressed air usable.
Pneumatic tool: A tool powered by compressed air rather than an electric motor or manual force. Air motors and impact mechanisms make compressed air useful for demanding work.
Atmospheric pressure: The pressure exerted by the weight of Earth's atmosphere. It is the baseline that compressed air exceeds.
Hydraulics: The use of pressurized liquids to transmit force and control motion. Hydraulic systems deliver greater force in compact actuators, while air is compressible.
Gas pressure: The force per unit area exerted by gas particles colliding with surfaces. Compressed air stores energy as pressure above its surroundings.
Air brake: A braking system that uses compressed air to apply force to vehicle brakes. Heavy vehicles use stored air to actuate reliable braking systems.
Pneumatics: The engineering use of pressurized gas to transmit and control power. Compressed air is the principal working medium in pneumatic systems.
Vacuum: A region with pressure below atmospheric pressure. Vacuum systems use pressure differences in the opposite direction from compressed-air systems.
Boyle's law: A gas law stating that pressure and volume are inversely related at constant temperature and amount of gas. It describes how reducing air volume raises pressure in many compressors.
Pneumatic conveying: The transport of bulk materials through pipes using moving air. A compressed-air stream can carry powders and granules through enclosed routes.
