Concordat of Worms

The 1122 agreement between Emperor Henry V and Pope Calixtus II that ended the Investiture Controversy by distinguishing spiritual authority to consecrate bishops from temporal authority over their lands and offices.

Lay investiture: The practice of secular rulers granting bishops the symbols and authority of ecclesiastical office. The agreement barred the emperor from conferring spiritual authority with the ring and staff.
