Condensed matter physics

Condensed matter physics studies how large assemblies of particles produce collective properties, especially in solids and liquids. It connects microscopic interactions to phenomena such as magnetism, superconductivity, and crystalline order.

Quantum mechanics: The framework describing matter and energy at atomic and subatomic scales through quantized states and probabilistic predictions. Electron behavior in materials follows quantum rules, even when the resulting properties are macroscopic.
Phase transition: A change between distinct states of matter or material phases as conditions such as temperature or pressure vary. Sharp changes in order or response are central examples of collective behavior.
Semiconductor: A material whose electrical conductivity lies between that of a conductor and an insulator and can be controlled. Band structure and doping make semiconductors the basis of modern electronic components.
Paul Drude: A German physicist who developed an early electron model of electrical and thermal conduction in metals. His classical model established a starting point for explaining metallic transport.
Plasma physics: The study of ionized gases whose charged particles collectively respond to electromagnetic fields. It focuses on a distinct state of matter rather than the solids and liquids central here.
Statistical mechanics: The theory connecting microscopic states and interactions to the measurable properties of large systems. It explains how collective material properties emerge from many interacting particles.
Magnetism: Physical phenomena arising from magnetic fields and magnetic moments, including their collective ordering in materials. Interactions between atomic magnetic moments produce ferro-, antiferro-, and other magnetic phases.
Transistor: An electronic device that uses a material structure to control or amplify electrical signals. Its operation depends on engineered charge transport in semiconducting materials.
Felix Bloch: A Swiss-American physicist whose work established key quantum descriptions of electrons in periodic solids. Bloch’s theorem underlies the modern account of electrons moving through crystals.
Particle physics: The study of fundamental particles and their interactions at the smallest known scales. It seeks fundamental constituents and laws, while condensed matter examines emergent behavior in large systems.
