Congress of Berlin

The Congress of Berlin was an 1878 diplomatic conference that revised the Treaty of San Stefano and reorganized territorial arrangements in the Balkans.

Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878): A war in which Russia and its allies defeated the Ottoman Empire, ending with the Treaty of San Stefano. Russia’s victory created the settlement that the Congress was convened to revise.
Treaty of Berlin (1878): The treaty signed on 13 July 1878 that recorded the Congress’s settlement of the Eastern Question. It converted the conference’s negotiations into binding territorial and political provisions.
League of the Three Emperors: A shifting diplomatic understanding among Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia during the late nineteenth century. Balkan disputes exposed tensions among the powers whose cooperation Bismarck had sought to preserve.
Congress of Vienna: A 1814–1815 diplomatic conference that redrew Europe after Napoleon’s defeat. Both conferences sought a great-power balance, but addressed different wars and political orders.
Treaty of San Stefano: An 1878 treaty that ended the Russo-Turkish War and proposed a large autonomous Bulgarian state. Its terms, especially the proposed Bulgaria, prompted the great powers to demand a new conference.
Principality of Bulgaria: An autonomous principality established under Ottoman suzerainty by the Treaty of Berlin in 1878. The treaty replaced San Stefano’s larger Bulgaria with a smaller autonomous principality.
Serbian–Bulgarian War: An 1885 war in which Serbia fought Bulgaria after Bulgaria’s unification with Eastern Rumelia. The Congress’s divided Bulgarian territories formed the background to the later unification crisis.
Treaty of Paris (1856): The treaty that ended the Crimean War and imposed limits on Russian influence around the Black Sea. It offers an earlier example of European powers collectively restricting Russia after a war.
Eastern Question: The diplomatic struggle over the weakening Ottoman Empire and the distribution of influence in its former territories. The conference was one episode in the broader contest over Ottoman decline.
Eastern Rumelia: An autonomous province of the Ottoman Empire established south of Bulgaria by the Treaty of Berlin. Its separate status divided the Bulgarian lands that San Stefano had proposed to unite.
