Conidium

A conidium is an asexual fungal spore formed externally, usually at the tip or side of a specialized hypha. It disperses and can germinate into a new fungal colony.

Conidiogenesis: The process by which fungi produce conidia from specialized cells or hyphae. It describes how an external spore develops from its conidiogenous cell.
Hypha: A branching, threadlike filament that forms the vegetative body of many fungi. Conidia often develop from specialized portions of these fungal filaments.
Aspergillus: A genus of filamentous fungi with characteristic conidiophores and widespread environmental and clinical importance. Its airborne conidia are produced in distinctive, often radiating heads.
Sporangiospore: An asexual fungal spore formed inside a saclike sporangium. Unlike conidia, these spores develop internally within a spore-bearing structure.
Conidiophore: A specialized fungal hypha that bears conidia, directly or through conidiogenous cells. This stalk supports the structures that produce and present conidia.
Mycelium: The network of hyphae that constitutes the main body of a fungus. The mycelium produces reproductive hyphae that bear conidia.
Penicillium: A genus of filamentous fungi whose branched conidiophores often resemble a brush. Its characteristic conidial chains make the genus readily recognizable microscopically.
Ascospore: A sexual fungal spore formed inside an ascus. It is produced through sexual reproduction rather than conidial asexual development.
Phialide: A flask-shaped conidiogenous cell that produces conidia successively from its opening. Many fungi generate chains of conidia from these specialized cells.
Fungal spore: A reproductive or dispersal cell capable of developing into a fungus under suitable conditions. Conidia are one major type within the broader category of fungal spores.
