Stroma

A compact mass of fungal tissue in or on which reproductive structures may form. It may be embedded in a host or grow on a substrate.

Hypha: A threadlike fungal filament that grows and branches to form a network. Hyphae interweave to make the compact tissue of a stroma.
Ascocarp: The spore-producing fruiting body of an ascomycete fungus. Some stromata contain or support ascocarps.
Claviceps purpurea: A fungus that infects grasses and cereals, producing dark ergot sclerotia in place of seeds. Its compact fungal structures develop in infected grass ovaries and later support reproduction.
Sclerotium: A compact, nutrient-storing mass of hardened fungal hyphae that can survive unfavorable conditions. Unlike a stroma, a sclerotium primarily persists or stores reserves rather than bearing reproductive structures.
Mycelium: The network of hyphae that forms the vegetative body of a fungus. A stroma is a compacted fungal structure rather than an ordinary diffuse mycelium.
Perithecium: A flask-shaped ascomycete fruiting body with a small opening through which spores escape. Perithecia may be embedded within stromatic tissue.
Xylaria polymorpha: A wood-decaying fungus whose dark, club-shaped fruiting bodies commonly grow from dead wood. Its firm fruiting tissue illustrates a conspicuous stromatic form.
Stroma (lichen): A compact fungal tissue layer in some lichens, often containing embedded algal cells. Lichenologists use stroma for a distinct structure from the reproductive fungal tissue meant here.
Fungal tissue: Organized fungal hyphae forming a coherent structural mass. Stroma is a specialized mass of fungal tissue.
Ascus: A saclike cell in which ascomycete fungi form sexual spores. The asci inside stromatic fruiting structures produce ascospores.
