Connecticut River

The Connecticut River flows south from northern New Hampshire along the New Hampshire–Vermont border and through Massachusetts and Connecticut to Long Island Sound.

Connecticut River watershed: The land area whose streams and rivers drain into the Connecticut River. This drainage basin gathers water from four states into the river’s main channel.
Glacial Lake Hitchcock: A large proglacial lake that occupied the Connecticut River Valley after the last ice age. Its sediments and drainage history shaped the valley the river now traverses.
Abenaki: An Indigenous people of northeastern North America, with communities in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Quebec. Abenaki communities have longstanding ties to the river’s northern reaches.
Connecticut River steamboats: Passenger and freight vessels that operated on the Connecticut River during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Steamboats extended river transport between coastal ports and inland towns.
Connecticut River floods: Overbank floods that affect communities along the Connecticut River and its tributaries. Major floods have damaged towns and prompted regional flood-control projects.
White River (Vermont): A Vermont tributary that joins the Connecticut River at White River Junction. It is one of the major tributaries entering the river in Vermont.
Connecticut River Valley: A long lowland region extending through New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. The river’s course follows this valley through much of New England.
Wangunk: An Indigenous people whose homeland included the lower Connecticut River Valley. Wangunk communities lived along the river in what is now central Connecticut.
Connecticut River Valley agriculture: Farming in the fertile floodplain and uplands of the Connecticut River Valley. River deposits and accessible water supported intensive valley agriculture.
1936 New England flood: A devastating flood that inundated parts of New England in March 1936. It drove federal investment in reservoirs and flood control across the Connecticut River basin.
