Conservation movement

The conservation movement is a social and political effort to protect natural environments, wildlife, and resources from destruction or depletion. Its approaches range from managing resource use to preserving ecosystems from human development.

George Perkins Marsh: An American diplomat and writer whose 1864 book argued that human activity could degrade landscapes and climates. His account of human-caused environmental change helped supply an intellectual foundation for organized conservation.
Protected area: A geographically defined area managed to conserve nature and associated cultural values. Setting land aside is one direct way the movement protects habitats and landscapes.
Preservationism: An approach that protects nature from intensive human use, especially to maintain its ecological or aesthetic qualities. Its emphasis on keeping landscapes wild differs from conservation focused on managed use.
National park: A protected area designated by a national government to conserve natural or cultural features for public benefit. National parks became a highly visible institution for protecting landscapes.
John Muir: A Scottish-American naturalist and writer who advocated protecting wild landscapes and helped establish the Sierra Club. His preservationist vision brought public attention to wilderness protection.
Wildlife conservation: The protection and management of wild species and their habitats to sustain populations and ecological processes. Species protection is a central branch of conservation action.
Wise use movement: A political movement that opposes restrictions on natural-resource development, often in the name of local control and economic use. It challenges conservation measures that limit extraction or development.
Endangered Species Act of 1973: A United States law providing for the conservation of threatened and endangered species and their habitats. It shows how conservation advocacy produced strong legal protection for species.
Theodore Roosevelt: The 26th president of the United States, known for expanding federal protection of forests, wildlife, and public lands. His administration made conservation a prominent federal policy.
Sustainable forest management: Forest stewardship that maintains biodiversity, productivity, and ecological processes while allowing defined uses. It illustrates conservation through regulated use rather than complete exclusion.
