Cooper Creek

Cooper Creek is an intermittent inland watercourse in Queensland and South Australia. It flows through the Channel Country toward Lake Eyre, spreading across floodplains during major flows.

Channel Country: An arid region of inland Australia where rivers spread through branching channels and floodplains. Cooper Creek is one of the region’s major watercourses, shaping its braided landscapes.
Coongie Lakes: A complex of freshwater lakes and wetlands in South Australia’s Channel Country. Floodwaters from Cooper Creek replenish this internationally recognized wetland system.
Charles Sturt: A British-born Australian explorer who led expeditions into inland Australia in the nineteenth century. Sturt named Cooper Creek during his 1845–46 expedition.
Lake Eyre: A large salt lake in South Australia, also known by its Indigenous name, Kati Thanda. It is the basin’s terminal lake toward which Cooper Creek flows.
Lake Eyre Basin: The drainage basin of Lake Eyre, covering much of central Australia. Cooper Creek is a major river system within this endorheic basin.
Cooper Creek floodplain: The broad low-lying area beside Cooper Creek that is inundated during floods. Its temporary wetlands support plants and animals adapted to highly variable water.
Thomas Mitchell: A surveyor and explorer who led several expeditions across southeastern Australia. Mitchell named the creek in 1845 after South Australian judge Charles Cooper.
Diamantina River: An intermittent river that flows through Queensland and South Australia toward Lake Eyre. It is Cooper Creek’s neighboring major river system in the Channel Country.
Inland delta: A delta-like network where a river disperses across an inland plain rather than reaching the sea. Cooper Creek’s channels fan out across floodplains during large floods.
Australian pelican: A large waterbird native to Australia and nearby islands. Cooper Creek floodwaters create breeding and feeding habitat for waterbirds such as pelicans.
