Crimean War

The Crimean War (1853–1856) pitted the Ottoman Empire, Britain, France, and Sardinia against Russia, with its most famous campaigns fought on the Crimean Peninsula.

Siege of Sevastopol: A prolonged siege of Russia’s principal Black Sea naval base, fought from 1854 to 1855. Its fall ended the war’s central campaign in Crimea.
Eastern Question: The diplomatic problem posed by the declining Ottoman Empire and competition over its territories. The war grew from rival powers’ efforts to shape the Ottoman Empire’s future.
Florence Nightingale: A British nurse and health reformer who organized nursing care for soldiers during the Crimean War. Her reports made military hospitals and preventable deaths central to public debate.

Emancipation reform of 1861: The Russian reform that abolished serfdom in 1861 under Alexander II. Crimean defeat strengthened the case that Russia’s social and military systems needed reform.
Battle of Inkerman: An 1854 battle in which British and French forces repelled a Russian attack near Sevastopol. Its close combat contrasts with the prolonged siege that dominated the campaign.
