Crown of Aragon

A composite monarchy whose ruler governed the Kingdom of Aragon and other territories around the western Mediterranean under distinct laws and institutions. It developed from the union of Aragon and Catalonia and was incorporated into the Spanish monarchy in the early modern period.

Kingdom of Aragon: A medieval and early modern kingdom in northeastern Iberia, ruled by the House of Aragon. It was the monarchy’s namesake kingdom and one of its constituent realms.
Ramiro II of Aragon: King of Aragon from 1134 to 1157, who arranged the marriage that joined Aragon’s dynasty to Barcelona’s counts. His dynastic settlement initiated the union that formed the Crown.
Catalan Company: A company of mercenaries formed in the early 14th century to serve the Byzantine Empire and later establish rule in Greek territories. Its campaigns extended Aragonese influence into the eastern Mediterranean.
Compromise of Caspe: A 1412 settlement in which representatives of the Crown’s realms selected Ferdinand of Antequera as king after a succession crisis. It brought the Trastámara dynasty to the Crown’s throne.
Crown of Castile: A composite monarchy centered on Castile that became the other principal dynastic partner in the Spanish monarchy. Its institutions and political structure differed from the Crown’s negotiated, realm-based arrangements.
Principality of Catalonia: A historical territory in northeastern Iberia whose institutions and laws developed around the County of Barcelona. Its political institutions remained distinct within the Crown.
Petronilla of Aragon: Queen of Aragon whose marriage to Raymond Berengar IV linked the Aragonese royal house with the County of Barcelona. Her marriage established the dynastic basis for the union.
Duchy of Athens: A Crusader state in Greece ruled by Catalan forces from 1311 until the late 14th century. Its Catalan rulers connected the Crown’s military networks to Greece.
Ferdinand II of Aragon: King of Aragon from 1479 to 1516, whose marriage to Isabella of Castile joined the two dynasties. His reign linked the Crown’s monarchy to the emerging Spanish composite monarchy.
Kingdom of Navarre: A medieval and early modern kingdom in the western Pyrenees, ruled by its own dynasties and institutions. Its separate political history distinguishes it from the Crown’s constituent realms.
