Cyclohexane

Cyclohexane is a saturated cyclic hydrocarbon with formula C₆H₁₂. Its flexible ring adopts a low-strain chair shape and serves as an industrial solvent and precursor to nylon intermediates.

Cyclohexane conformation: The three-dimensional shapes cyclohexane adopts as its ring atoms rotate and flex. Its chair, boat, and twist-boat shapes arise from the molecule’s flexible six-membered ring.
Cyclohexanol: A secondary alcohol with formula C₆H₁₁OH, used in producing adipic acid and caprolactam. It is one of the two principal products of cyclohexane oxidation.
Alkanes: Acyclic or cyclic saturated hydrocarbons containing only carbon–carbon and carbon–hydrogen single bonds. Cyclohexane is a saturated hydrocarbon and shares alkane-like bonding and reactivity.
Hexane: A straight-chain saturated hydrocarbon with formula C₆H₁₄. It has the same carbon count but is acyclic and carries two more hydrogen atoms.
Chair conformation: A six-membered ring shape in which adjacent bonds are staggered and angle strain is low. Cyclohexane overwhelmingly favors this low-energy geometry.
Cyclohexanone: A cyclic ketone with formula C₆H₁₀O, used as a precursor to caprolactam and other chemicals. It is the other principal product of cyclohexane oxidation and feeds nylon production.
Cycloalkanes: Saturated hydrocarbons whose carbon atoms form one or more rings. Cyclohexane is the six-carbon member of this structural family.
Benzene: An aromatic hydrocarbon with formula C₆H₆ and a planar, conjugated ring. Its unsaturated aromatic ring contrasts with cyclohexane’s saturated, flexible ring.
Axial and equatorial positions: The two orientations available to substituents attached to a cyclohexane ring. These positions explain why substituted cyclohexanes favor one chair arrangement over another.
Adipic acid: A six-carbon dicarboxylic acid used chiefly to make nylon 6,6 and polyurethane materials. Industrial oxidation routes convert cyclohexane-derived intermediates into adipic acid.
