Daimyo

Daimyo were powerful Japanese territorial lords who governed domains and owed allegiance to the shogun. Their authority rested on land, retainers, and military power.

Shogun: A military ruler who held governing authority in Japan, often in the emperor’s name. Daimyo owed allegiance to the shogun, whose authority structured their political relationships.
Sankin-kōtai: The Edo-period system requiring daimyo to alternate residence between their domains and the shogun’s capital. It monitored daimyo and imposed substantial travel and household costs.
Sengoku period: A period of civil war and political fragmentation in Japan, conventionally dated from the mid-15th to late 16th century. Regional warlords expanded their power amid the breakdown of central authority.
Date Masamune: A powerful daimyo who ruled northern Japan in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. His regional base and diplomatic ambitions illustrate daimyo power beyond central Japan.
Meiji prefecture system: The centralized system of prefectural administration established in Japan during the Meiji era. It replaced daimyo domains with centrally governed territories.
Han system: The system of territorial domains ruled by daimyo during the Edo period. A daimyo’s domain was the basis of local administration and revenue.
Edo Castle: The seat of the Tokugawa shogunate in Edo, now Tokyo. Daimyo attended the shogun there and maintained residences in the capital.
Oda Nobunaga: A Japanese warlord who began the unification of Japan in the late 16th century. His campaigns defeated rival daimyo and weakened the fragmented order.
Mōri Terumoto: A daimyo who led the Mōri clan and opposed Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Sekigahara. His defeat helped determine which daimyo would dominate the new Tokugawa order.
Tokyo: The capital of Japan, formerly known as Edo. The shogunate’s capital grew through daimyo residences and the political demands of their attendance.
