David Hilbert

David Hilbert (1862–1943) was a German mathematician whose work shaped invariant theory, geometry, number theory, mathematical logic, and the foundations of mathematics.

Invariant theory: The study of algebraic expressions that remain unchanged under transformations. Hilbert’s early work established foundational results in this field.
Hilbert's program: A project to formalize mathematics and prove the consistency of its formal systems by restricted means. It turned Hilbert’s foundational ambitions into a focused research agenda.
