L. E. J. Brouwer

L. E. J. Brouwer (1881–1966) was a Dutch mathematician and philosopher who founded intuitionism and helped establish modern topology, including through his fixed-point theorem.

Intuitionism: A philosophy of mathematics that treats mathematical objects as mental constructions and rejects proofs lacking constructive content. Brouwer founded this philosophy and made it central to his account of mathematics.
Brouwer fixed-point theorem: A theorem stating that every continuous map from a compact convex set to itself has a fixed point. This is Brouwer’s best-known topological theorem and a model of his mathematical influence.
University of Amsterdam: A Dutch public research university founded in Amsterdam in 1632. Brouwer studied and later held his professorship there.
Brouwer–Hilbert controversy: A dispute over mathematical foundations between intuitionism and Hilbert’s formalist program in the 1920s. The conflict brought Brouwer’s foundational commitments into direct opposition with Hilbert’s.
Topology: The mathematical study of properties preserved under continuous deformation. Brouwer’s major mathematical contributions helped shape topology as a modern field.
Fixed point: An input that a function maps to itself. The theorem named for Brouwer guarantees such an input under specific topological conditions.
Mathematical intuitionism: Brouwer’s foundational program, which treats mathematics as a construction of the human mind. His 1907 dissertation set out the program that became intuitionism.
Intuitionistic type theory: A constructive formal system in which propositions correspond to types and proofs to programs. It develops constructive ideas compatible with the proof-centered outlook Brouwer advanced.
Constructive proof: A proof that establishes a mathematical object exists by providing a method to construct it. Brouwer’s intuitionism requires existence proofs to provide constructions.
Continuous function: A function whose outputs change without jumps as its input varies. Continuity is the key condition in Brouwer’s fixed-point theorem.
