Zambezi Expedition : A British expedition led by David Livingstone to explore the Zambezi River and promote commerce and Christianity. Its failures exposed the gap between Livingstone’s ambitions and the river’s navigability.
Blantyre, South Lanarkshire : A town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, where David Livingstone was born in 1813. Its industrial working-class setting formed Livingstone’s early life.
Anti-slavery movement : A movement seeking to end slavery and the slave trade through political, religious, and social action. Livingstone publicized the East African slave trade and urged British action against it.
Mungo Park : A Scottish explorer who traveled along the Niger River in West Africa in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Like Livingstone, Park became famous through exploration narratives, but focused on the Niger basin.
Victoria Falls : A large waterfall on the Zambezi River, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya. Livingstone named the falls for Queen Victoria after seeing them in 1855.
London Missionary Society : A British Protestant missionary organization founded in 1795 to spread Christianity overseas. It trained Livingstone and sent him to southern Africa in 1840.

The Nile Expedition : David Livingstone’s final search for the sources of the Nile in central Africa. The expedition ended with his death before he could resolve the river’s origins.
Robert Moffat : A Scottish Congregationalist missionary who established a mission at Kuruman in southern Africa. Livingstone joined Moffat’s mission network and married his daughter, Mary.
