Deadbolt

A door lock bolt moved by a key or thumb turn that extends into the frame without a spring-operated latch mechanism. Its rigid bolt resists forced entry more effectively than a spring latch.

Lock bolt: A rigid metal bar or pin that secures a door by entering a strike plate or other fitting. The deadbolt’s defining moving part projects from the door into the frame.
Spring latch: A beveled, spring-loaded bolt that retracts when pressed against a strike plate. Unlike a deadbolt, it can be pushed back without turning a key or thumb turn.
Single-cylinder deadbolt: A deadbolt with a keyed cylinder outside and a thumb turn inside. This common design allows key access from outdoors and tool-free operation indoors.
Pin tumbler lock: A cylinder lock that uses spring-loaded pin pairs to prevent rotation until the correct key aligns them. Many keyed deadbolts use this mechanism to authorize cylinder rotation.
Cylinder lock: A lock operated by turning a plug inside a cylinder with a matching key. In keyed deadbolts, the cylinder translates key rotation into bolt movement.
Deadlatch: A spring latch with a secondary plunger that blocks retraction when the door is closed. It adds resistance to latch shimming but remains spring-operated.
Double-cylinder deadbolt: A deadbolt requiring a key on both sides of the door. It can deter access through nearby glass but may impede emergency exit.
Lock picking: A method of manipulating a lock’s components without its original key. It targets the cylinder mechanism rather than the deadbolt’s resistance to physical force.
Thumb turn: A small interior handle that rotates a lock mechanism without a key. It retracts or extends many deadbolts from inside the room.
Mortise lock: A lock installed in a pocket cut into a door’s edge, often combining a latch and deadbolt. It is a lock installation and assembly style, not simply a deadbolt mechanism.
