Deflagration

Deflagration is a combustion wave that travels through reacting material slower than sound travels through that material. It propagates mainly by heat and mass transfer from burned material to unburned material.

Flame front: The thin moving zone where combustion transforms unburned reactants into hot products. A deflagration advances as its flame front ignites material ahead of it.
Detonation: A combustion wave coupled to a shock that travels through material faster than sound in that material. Unlike deflagration, detonation is supersonic and driven by shock compression.
Spark-ignition engine: An internal-combustion engine that ignites a fuel–air mixture with an electric spark. Normal engine power comes from controlled deflagration across the cylinder.
Speed of sound: The speed at which small pressure disturbances travel through a medium. Deflagration is defined by its wave traveling slower than sound in the material.
Candle flame: A flame sustained by vaporized candle wax reacting with oxygen in the surrounding air. Its flame propagates through a gas-phase reaction zone by subsonic combustion.
Heat conduction: The transfer of thermal energy through matter by microscopic interactions, without bulk motion of the material. Conducted heat can raise unburned material to its ignition temperature.
Chapman–Jouguet condition: A condition describing a self-sustaining detonation whose products move at the local sound speed relative to the wave. It characterizes ideal detonations, the contrasting combustion-wave regime.
Knock (combustion): Abnormal combustion in a spark-ignition engine that produces damaging pressure oscillations. Rapid end-gas burning can accompany or trigger knock during deflagration.
Combustion: A chemical reaction, usually rapid, between a fuel and an oxidizer that releases heat. Deflagration is a propagating mode of combustion.
Bunsen burner: A laboratory burner that mixes fuel gas with air to produce a controllable flame. Its premixed flame provides a familiar example of deflagration.
