Delian League

An alliance of Greek city-states founded in 478/477 BCE under Athenian leadership to resist Persia. Its treasury and military power gradually came under Athenian control, transforming it into an empire.

Phoros: The regular tribute paid by members of the Delian League, in money or ships. Athens used this assessment to fund the league’s fleet and its growing power.
Greco-Persian Wars: A series of conflicts in the fifth century BCE between the Persian Empire and Greek states. The Persian threat supplied the reason for founding the league after the invasion of Greece.
Cimon: An Athenian general and politician who led campaigns against Persia and strengthened Athenian power in the league. His victories expanded the alliance while making Athens its dominant military force.
First Peloponnesian War: A series of conflicts between Athens and Sparta with their allies, conventionally dated 460–446/445 BCE. The conflict exposed how Athenian expansion and league power threatened other Greek states.
Peloponnesian League: A Spartan-led alliance of Greek states, organized primarily through bilateral agreements and land-based military cooperation. Its Spartan leadership and structure contrasted with Athens’s naval, tribute-based league.
Delian League treasury: The common fund of the Delian League, initially kept on the island of Delos. Moving it to Athens in 454 BCE made Athenian control of league finances explicit.
Battle of Mycale: A Greek victory over Persian forces near Mycale in 479 BCE, on the coast of Asia Minor. The victory helped encourage Greek cities in the Aegean to continue the war against Persia.
Themistocles: An Athenian statesman and general who promoted the fleet that made Athens a leading naval power. The naval strength he helped build underpinned Athens’s later leadership of the league.
Peloponnesian War: A prolonged war between Athens and Sparta with their respective allies, lasting from 431 to 404 BCE. The empire built from the league became a central source of Spartan opposition and wartime strategy.
Boeotian League: A federation of communities in central Greece, dominated at different times by Thebes. Its regional federation offers a different model from the Delian League’s Athenian-led maritime alliance.
