Devaraja

The Devaraja was a Khmer royal cult that linked kingship with divine authority, especially in the Angkorian state. Its rites and sacred images helped ground royal legitimacy.

Shiva: A major Hindu deity associated with creation, destruction, asceticism, and cosmic power. Angkorian Devaraja worship was closely associated with Shiva and his divine authority.
Jayavarman II: A Khmer ruler traditionally regarded as the founder of the Angkorian empire in the early ninth century. The Sdok Kak Thom inscription retrospectively associates him with the cult’s establishment.
Devaraja (title): A Sanskrit-derived royal title meaning “god-king,” used in several South and Southeast Asian contexts. The title is often confused with the distinct Khmer royal cult.
Javanese devarāja: A form of divine kingship associated with Hindu-Buddhist rulers in Java. It shares a name with the Khmer cult but developed within a different political and ritual setting.

Rajendravarman II: A Khmer king who ruled from 944 to 968 and restored the capital at Angkor. His reign’s inscriptions and temple building show how royal authority developed after the cult’s early period.
Chakravartin: An ideal universal ruler in Indian religious and political traditions. This model of sovereignty grounded royal legitimacy differently from the Khmer royal cult.
Phnom Bakheng: A late ninth-century state temple built on a hill at Angkor under Yasovarman I. Its temple-mountain design helped establish a monumental center for royal power.
