Dialects

Dialects are varieties of a language distinguished by systematic differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, or grammar. They may be associated with regions, social groups, or situations.

Mutual intelligibility: The degree to which speakers of different language varieties can understand one another without prior learning. It helps explain why some varieties are treated as dialects of one language and others as separate languages.
Dialect continuum: A chain of neighboring dialects whose differences accumulate gradually across geography. It shows why dialect boundaries can be gradual rather than sharply defined.
Standard language: A codified variety promoted for formal use in education, government, and public communication. Standards are often privileged over other dialects despite sharing the same linguistic system.
Sociolinguistics: The study of how language varies and functions in social life. It investigates how dialect features correlate with social groups and settings.
Phonology: The study of how speech sounds function and are organized in a language. Systematic sound patterns distinguish dialects even when their vocabulary is similar.
Dialect leveling: The reduction of distinctive local features through contact among speakers of different dialects. Mobility and sustained contact can make local dialects more alike.
Language: A socially shared system of communication using structured signs, such as speech or writing. The boundary between a language and its dialects is not determined by structure alone.
Dialect geography: The mapping of linguistic features across geographic regions. It documents where dialect features occur and how their distributions overlap.
Morphosyntax: The study of how word forms and sentence structures interact in a language. Differences in inflection and sentence structure are grammatical markers of dialect variation.
Koineization: The formation of a new, relatively stable variety through contact among speakers of different dialects. It describes how dialect contact can produce a shared community variety.
