Knowra Dichromate Dichromate Dichromate is the Cr₂O₇²⁻ oxyanion, in which two chromium(VI) centers are joined through oxygen. In acidic solution it is a strong oxidizing agent that is reduced to chromium(III).
Chromium oxidation states : The integer oxidation numbers chromium can have in its compounds, including +6 in dichromate and +3 in its common reduction product. Dichromate’s oxidizing action converts chromium from +6 to +3.
Potassium dichromate : The water-soluble ionic compound K₂Cr₂O₇, widely used as a source of dichromate ions. Its stable composition and high purity make it useful for preparing standard solutions.
Permanganate : The MnO₄⁻ oxyanion, a strong oxidizing agent whose reduction products depend on solution conditions. Permanganate is a competing titrant and oxidant, often recognizable by its intense purple color.
Hexavalent chromium : Chromium in the +6 oxidation state, a toxic and carcinogenic form found in several industrial compounds. Dichromate is one member of this hazardous chemical class.
Redox reaction : A chemical reaction in which electrons transfer between species, changing their oxidation states. Dichromate oxidizes other substances by accepting electrons.
Sodium dichromate : The highly water-soluble sodium salt Na₂Cr₂O₇, produced chiefly as an industrial chromium compound. It is a major commercial form of dichromate used in chromium processing.
Chromate : The CrO₄²⁻ oxyanion, a yellow chromium(VI) species in alkaline or near-neutral aqueous conditions. Chromate and dichromate interconvert with pH but differ in structure and solution color.
Occupational exposure to chromium(VI) : Workplace contact with chromium(VI) compounds through inhalation, ingestion, or skin exposure. Handling dichromate can expose workers to a carcinogenic chromium(VI) compound.
Chromate–dichromate equilibrium : The pH-dependent equilibrium between yellow chromate ions and orange dichromate ions in water. Acidification shifts chromate toward dichromate, while added base reverses the shift.
Dichromate titration : A volumetric redox method that uses dichromate solution to determine the amount of a reducing substance. Dichromate’s stable composition makes it suitable for quantitative redox analysis.
