Dilmun

Dilmun was an ancient society and trading hub centered on Bahrain and nearby Gulf coasts. It linked Mesopotamia with communities in the Indus Valley and Oman.

Bahrain: An island country in the Persian Gulf, known in antiquity as the core of Dilmun. Bahrain held Dilmun’s principal settlements, burial grounds, and political center.
Dilmun burial mounds: Thousands of prehistoric and Bronze Age burial structures concentrated on Bahrain and nearby islands. Their construction and distribution document major phases of Dilmun’s population and social organization.
Persian Gulf: A shallow sea between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran, connected to the Indian Ocean through the Strait of Hormuz. Dilmun’s maritime position depended on routes across this gulf and its islands.

Bronze Age: A period when bronze tools and weapons were widely used, alongside growing cities and long-distance exchange. Dilmun flourished within the Bronze Age networks linking West and South Asia.
Epic of Gilgamesh: An ancient Mesopotamian epic whose surviving versions recount Gilgamesh’s quest and encounters with mortality. Its flood narrative associates Dilmun with Utnapishtim’s distant dwelling.
Barbar Temples: A complex of ancient temples on Bahrain, built and rebuilt during the third and second millennia BCE. The temples show the religious architecture of Dilmun’s early urban society.
Dilmun seals: Carved stamp and cylinder seals associated with Dilmun, used for identification and administration. Their designs and finds help track Dilmun’s contacts and changing political identity.
