Dimethylformamide

Dimethylformamide, usually N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), is a polar aprotic solvent with a high boiling point, widely used in chemical synthesis and industrial processing.

Polar aprotic solvent: A solvent that has substantial polarity but does not donate hydrogen bonds through O–H or N–H groups. DMF belongs to this solvent class and shares its characteristic support for ionic reactions.
Vilsmeier–Haack reaction: An electrophilic substitution reaction that commonly uses DMF and phosphorus oxychloride to introduce a formyl group. DMF supplies the carbon and nitrogen framework of the formylating reagent.
