Dinaric Alps

The Dinaric Alps are a mountain chain along the western Balkan Peninsula, extending parallel to the Adriatic coast. They are marked by extensive limestone karst terrain.

Karst: A landscape shaped by the dissolution of soluble rock, especially limestone, often containing caves and sinkholes. Limestone dissolution gives much of the range its characteristic rugged terrain.
Adriatic microplate: A small tectonic plate or continental fragment between the African and Eurasian plates, associated with the Adriatic region. Its motion contributed to compression and uplift along the Dinaric belt.
Dinara: A mountain massif on the Croatia–Bosnia and Herzegovina border, giving its name to the Dinaric Alps. Its summit, Troglav, is the highest point of the range.
Julian Alps: A mountain group in the southeastern Alps, spanning northeastern Italy and Slovenia. They adjoin the northwestern end of the Dinaric mountain system.
Karst spring: A spring where groundwater emerges from a karst aquifer, often with strong seasonal variation. Underground drainage from the limestone range feeds major springs and river sources.
Adriatic Sea: A Mediterranean sea between the Italian Peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula. The Dinaric chain runs parallel to its eastern shore.
African Plate: A major tectonic plate that includes most of Africa and parts of the surrounding ocean floor. Its northward movement helps drive tectonic deformation in the Mediterranean region.
Durmitor: A mountain massif in northwestern Montenegro, known for glacial landforms and deep river canyons. It illustrates the range’s high mountain scenery and protected natural areas.
Pindus: A mountain range running through western Greece and southern Albania. It continues the mountainous spine of the Balkan Peninsula farther south.
Neretva: A river flowing from the Dinaric highlands through Bosnia and Herzegovina into the Adriatic Sea. Its valley provides a major route through otherwise rugged terrain.
