Diocletian

Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284 to 305. He restored imperial authority after decades of crisis, reorganized administration and taxation, and established the Tetrarchy.

Tetrarchy: A system of imperial rule in which two senior emperors and two junior emperors governed the Roman Empire. Diocletian divided supreme authority among four rulers to improve defense and succession.
Diocletianic Persecution: The empire-wide persecution of Christians initiated under Diocletian and his co-emperors beginning in 303. It became the most severe Roman persecution of Christians and defined the final imperial crackdown.
Crisis of the Third Century: A period of political instability, civil wars, invasions, and economic disruption in the Roman Empire from 235 to 284. Diocletian came to power as this prolonged crisis reached its close.
Maximian: Roman emperor from 286 to 305 and Diocletian’s co-ruler in the Tetrarchy. Diocletian elevated Maximian to share imperial rule over the western provinces.
Principate: The system of Roman government established by Augustus, in which emperors presented themselves as first citizens. Diocletian’s more explicit autocracy departed from the Principate’s language of shared republican authority.
Roman provinces: Territorial administrative units governed by officials appointed under Roman authority. Diocletian multiplied provinces and grouped them into larger administrative units.
Abdication of Diocletian: Diocletian’s voluntary retirement from imperial office in 305, followed by his co-emperor Maximian. His retirement tested whether Tetrarchic rulers could surrender power and secure an orderly succession.
Carinus: Roman emperor from 283 to 285 and the son of Emperor Carus. Diocletian defeated Carinus in 285 to become sole ruler of the empire.
Galerius: Roman emperor from 305 to 311 who served as Diocletian’s junior partner in the Tetrarchy. Diocletian appointed Galerius Caesar and made him a central figure in the planned succession.
Augustus: The first Roman emperor, who ruled from 27 BCE to 14 CE and established the Principate. Diocletian’s divided rule and court ceremony differed sharply from Augustus’s foundational imperial model.
