Direct cinema

A documentary movement that seeks to observe events with minimal intervention, often using portable cameras and synchronous sound. Its practitioners favored extended observation over narration and staged scenes.

Synchronous sound: Recorded sound aligned in time with the images showing its source. Portable recorders let filmmakers capture speech and ambient sound alongside unfolding action.
Sync sound revolution: The mid-twentieth-century shift toward lightweight equipment capable of recording synchronized location sound. It removed a major technical barrier to recording spontaneous speech and action.
Primary: A 1960 documentary following the Wisconsin Democratic presidential primary campaign. Drew Associates’ film became a landmark demonstration of filming political events as they unfold.
