Diriyah

Diriyah is an oasis settlement northwest of Riyadh that became the capital of the First Saudi State in the eighteenth century. Its historic At-Turaif district preserves earthen architecture associated with the Saudi dynasty.

Wadi Hanifa: Wadi Hanifa is a valley and watercourse that runs through the Riyadh region. Its water and cultivable land helped sustain Diriyah’s oasis settlement.
At-Turaif: At-Turaif is Diriyah’s historic district, with mud-brick palaces and the remains of the First Saudi State’s political center. It preserves the clearest architectural record of Diriyah at its height.
Ottoman–Saudi War: The Ottoman–Saudi War was a conflict in which Ottoman forces and their Egyptian allies fought the First Saudi State from 1811 to 1818. The campaign ended with the fall of Diriyah, the state’s capital.
Diriyah Gate: Diriyah Gate is a Saudi development project focused on restoring and presenting historic Diriyah as a cultural and tourism destination. The project connects the old settlement’s heritage with contemporary urban development.
Mani' ibn Rabiah Al-Muraydi: Mani' ibn Rabiah Al-Muraydi was the ancestor traditionally credited with founding the Al Saud dynasty in Diriyah. The dynasty’s origin traditions link his settlement in the area to Diriyah’s beginnings.
Salwa Palace: Salwa Palace is a large mud-brick palace complex in At-Turaif, built as a residence and seat of government. Its rooms and courtyards reveal how rulers organized life and authority in Diriyah.
Ibrahim Pasha: Ibrahim Pasha was an Egyptian military commander who led the campaign that captured and destroyed Diriyah in 1818. His siege brought the First Saudi State’s capital to its end.
Bujairi Terrace: Bujairi Terrace is a dining and cultural destination beside At-Turaif in Diriyah. It illustrates how modern visitor facilities are placed alongside the historic district.
House of Saud: The House of Saud is the ruling dynasty of Saudi Arabia, founded in Diriyah in the eighteenth century. Its rise transformed Diriyah from a local settlement into a political center.
Najdi architecture: Najdi architecture is a building tradition of central Arabia, characterized by earthen materials and forms adapted to climate and local resources. At-Turaif’s buildings exemplify this regional construction tradition.
