Disc brake

A friction brake that slows a rotating wheel or shaft by pressing brake pads against a rotating disc. Friction converts motion into heat.

Brake caliper: A housing that holds disc-brake pads and presses them against the rotor. Its pistons turn applied hydraulic pressure into pad-clamping force.
Brake fluid: A fluid that transmits pressure through a hydraulic braking system. It carries force from the pedal or lever to the caliper.
Drum brake: A friction brake that presses shoes against the inside of a rotating drum. It encloses its friction surfaces, unlike a disc brake's exposed rotor and pads.
Automotive braking system: The collection of components that slows and stops a road vehicle. Disc brakes commonly serve as part of a car's service-braking system.
Brake pad: A friction material component pressed against a rotor to slow its rotation. Its friction surface generates braking force while wearing down over time.
Piston: A component that moves within a cylinder to transmit force through pressure or direct contact. Caliper pistons push the pads toward the rotor.
Rim brake: A bicycle brake that slows a wheel by pressing pads against its rim. It applies friction at the wheel rim rather than at a dedicated rotor.
Bicycle disc brake: A bicycle braking system that clamps pads onto a rotor attached to the wheel. It applies the disc-brake principle to bicycle wheels, including in wet conditions.
Brake rotor: A rotating disc attached to a wheel or shaft that receives friction from brake pads. The rotor is the disc whose rotation the pads oppose.
Torque: A measure of the turning effect produced by a force about an axis. A disc brake resists wheel rotation by applying opposing torque.
