Display P3

Display P3 is an RGB color space that uses the DCI-P3 primaries, a D65 white point, and the sRGB transfer function. Its gamut includes colors that standard sRGB cannot represent.

Color gamut: The range of colors a device or color space can represent. Display P3 covers a wider range of chromaticities than sRGB.
sRGB: An RGB color space and encoding standard designed for consistent color on common displays and the web. Display P3 shares sRGB’s transfer function but represents a wider gamut.
Color management: The controlled handling of color data across devices, software, and output processes. Color management maps Display P3 colors appropriately when devices use different gamuts.
Chromaticity: The hue and saturation of a color independent of its luminance. The P3 primary chromaticities set Display P3’s gamut boundary.
Wide-gamut display: A display capable of reproducing a broader range of colors than standard-gamut displays. Display P3 is a common target gamut for wide-gamut consumer screens.
CIE 1931 color space: A model of human color vision that maps visible colors to coordinates based on color-matching experiments. Its chromaticity framework locates Display P3’s primaries and white point.
DCI-P3: A digital-cinema color space with P3 primaries, a theatrical white point, and a cinema transfer function. Display P3 adapts its primaries for display use with D65 white and sRGB encoding.
ICC profile: A standardized data file describing the color characteristics of a device or color space. Profiles let software identify and transform Display P3 image colors.
D65: A standard daylight illuminant with a correlated color temperature of approximately 6504 kelvin. D65 defines the neutral reference white used by Display P3.
Color depth: The number of bits used to encode each pixel’s color information. A wider gamut can make banding more visible when color depth is limited.
