Display resolution

Display resolution is the number of distinct pixels a screen can show, usually expressed as pixel width by pixel height. It describes the image grid, not the screen’s physical size.

Pixel: A pixel is a smallest addressable element of a digital image or display. Resolution counts the pixels arranged across the screen’s width and height.
Native resolution: Native resolution is the fixed pixel grid of a display panel. It distinguishes the panel’s actual pixel dimensions from other signals it can accept.
4K resolution: 4K resolution is a family of image formats with about four thousand pixels across. It is a widely used high-resolution format for televisions and computer displays.
Refresh rate: Refresh rate is the number of times per second a display updates its image, measured in hertz. High resolution combined with high refresh rate increases the rate of image data that must be produced.
Aspect ratio: Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image’s width and height. Two displays can share a pixel count but use different width-to-height proportions.
Spatial resolution: Spatial resolution is the ability of an imaging system to distinguish nearby details in space. Display resolution is one pixel-grid specification, not a complete measure of visible detail.
Video graphics array: Video Graphics Array is a display standard introduced by IBM in 1987, commonly associated with 640 × 480 pixels. Its familiar dimensions provide a historical reference point for display resolutions.
Video bandwidth: Video bandwidth is the data-carrying capacity needed to transmit a video signal. Higher-resolution signals require more bandwidth, especially at higher refresh rates and color depths.
Pixel density: Pixel density is the number of pixels per unit of physical length, commonly measured in pixels per inch. It connects a resolution’s pixel grid to how tightly pixels are packed on a screen.
Image sharpness: Image sharpness is the perceived clarity of edges and fine detail in an image. A high pixel count alone does not guarantee a sharp-looking image.
