Divine attributes

Divine attributes are qualities predicated of God, such as knowledge, power, goodness, eternity, and simplicity. Their interpretation shapes accounts of what God is and how God relates to the world.

Analogy of being: The view that words applied to God and creatures have related but nonidentical meanings. It explains how divine qualities can be named without treating God and creatures as identical.
Cataphatic theology: An approach to theology that describes God through affirmative statements and names. It predicates positive qualities such as goodness and wisdom of God.
Classical theism: A tradition holding that God is eternal, immutable, necessary, and radically independent of creation. Its characteristic doctrines supply a prominent framework for interpreting divine attributes.
Omniscience: The property of knowing every truth, often attributed to God. It raises questions about whether divine knowledge includes future free choices.
Divine simplicity: The doctrine that God is not composed of parts or distinct attributes. It challenges the idea that God possesses goodness, knowledge, and power as separate properties.
Apophatic theology: An approach to theology that describes God chiefly by denying inadequate human concepts. It limits positive claims about attributes when those claims seem to confine God.
Divine simplicity in Thomism: The Thomistic doctrine that God's essence, existence, and attributes are identical in God. It gives a precise classical answer to whether attributes are really distinct from God.
Omnipotence: The property of being able to do everything that is logically possible. Its limits are tested by paradoxes such as whether God can create a stone too heavy to lift.
Divine transcendence: The doctrine that God exceeds the limits and categories of the created world. It constrains how human concepts can describe divine qualities.
Univocity of being: The view that being is predicated in the same sense of God and creatures. It offers a contrasting account of how divine and creaturely qualities are spoken of.
