Divine revelation

Divine revelation is knowledge or instruction believed to come from a deity through supernatural disclosure. It may be understood as direct communication, an interpreted event, or a disclosure preserved in sacred texts.

Prophecy: A message or foretelling believed to come from a deity and be communicated through a prophet. Prophetic speech is a direct channel through which divine instruction is claimed.
Deity: A supernatural being or ultimate reality worshiped or regarded as divine. Revelation presupposes a divine source capable of communicating knowledge.
Natural theology: The attempt to establish knowledge of God through reason and observation rather than special revelation. It contrasts revelation with knowledge claimed to arise from nature and rational inquiry.
General revelation: Theological knowledge of God understood as available broadly through nature, history, or conscience. It names a form of disclosure distinguished from revelation directed to particular people or communities.
Quranic revelation: The Islamic belief that the Quran was revealed by God to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel. It presents revelation as divine speech delivered to a prophet and recited as scripture.
Vision (religion): A religious experience in which a person perceives images or events understood as supernaturally disclosed. Visions provide a perceptual form of revelation distinct from ordinary speech.
Religious experience: An experience interpreted as an encounter with or awareness of the sacred or divine. Revelation is one kind of religious experience, though many such experiences make no revelatory claim.
Reason and faith: The relationship between rational inquiry and religious commitment or belief. Debates ask whether revelation complements reason, exceeds it, or conflicts with it.
Special revelation: Theological disclosure of divine knowledge through particular acts, messages, persons, or texts. It narrows the concept to specific disclosures rather than broadly accessible signs.
Torah revelation at Sinai: The account in Jewish tradition of God revealing the Torah to Moses at Mount Sinai. The Sinai narrative grounds a communal covenant in a foundational revelation.
