Division of Korea

The postwar separation of Korea into northern and southern occupation zones that became rival states in 1948. The division hardened into a military and political frontier after the Korean War.

Korean independence movement: A diverse movement that sought to end Japanese colonial rule and establish Korean self-government. Its competing visions of postcolonial government shaped Korea’s politics before partition.
