Douglas Engelbart

Douglas Engelbart was an American engineer and inventor whose work advanced interactive computing. He led the development of the computer mouse and demonstrated networked collaboration tools in 1968.

Mother of All Demos: A 1968 demonstration of interactive computing systems developed by Douglas Engelbart and his team. It made Engelbart’s integrated vision of computing visible to a large audience.
oN-Line System: An interactive computing system developed at the Augmentation Research Center under Engelbart’s direction. NLS brought together many of the tools shown in the 1968 demonstration.
As We May Think: Vannevar Bush’s 1945 essay proposing a machine for storing and navigating linked information. Bush’s imagined Memex helped frame Engelbart’s interest in augmenting intellectual work.

Augmentation Research Center: The research group at Stanford Research Institute that developed Engelbart’s interactive computing system. Its engineers and programmers turned Engelbart’s research program into NLS.
Memex: Vannevar Bush’s proposed device for storing documents and linking them through associative trails. Engelbart’s work pursued some of the information-linking ideas Bush had proposed.
Bill Duvall: An American computer scientist who helped develop the networking systems used in Engelbart’s demonstrations. Duvall helped connect NLS to a remote computer for the 1968 presentation.
Time-sharing: A computing method that lets multiple users interact with one computer by allocating processor time among them. Time-sharing made interactive access possible, while Engelbart emphasized augmenting collaborative work.
